Answer to Question
To: Iman Thawabteh
Question:
As-Salamu Alaykum,
I am a nursing student at Hebron University. A professor teaching us has started taking courses in the field of energy healing and wants to pursue a Master's degree in it.
However, a colleague of ours researched the topic and says it is prohibited (Haram) by Shari'ah. The professor asked him for definitive Shari'ah evidence (Dalil Shar'i) for its prohibition because she wants to complete her studies in it. But the student was unable to provide a clear evidence from the Quran and the Prophetic Sunnah regarding this subject. Could you please help me in providing the reasoning and your opinion on this matter?
Answer:
It is not clear from the question what is meant by "energy healing." It would have been better if the questioner had clarified the meaning of energy healing so that we could answer according to the specifics of the question...
Nevertheless, since the issue of prohibition (Tahrim) was mentioned, I expect that she is not asking about tangible, physical energy such as radiation therapy, laser treatment, or radiotherapy used for cancer treatment (where high-energy rays are used), or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), or the like. There is nothing wrong with using these and similar methods for treatment... Rather, I expect the questioner is asking about what is called "Bio-energy"... If this energy is what is intended regarding the treatment, then I say, and with Allah is the success:
According to the information we have gathered regarding the subject of bio-energy healing, it has become clear that it is a type of treatment based on Buddhist philosophical foundations. Its practitioners claim "it is a psycho-physical-spiritual treatment based on understanding the unseen influences on humans discovered by ancient Easterners, the most important of which is the existence of a flow of power in the universe called 'Ki', 'Chi', or 'Prana'. Humans can draw this energy and flow it into their invisible bodies to achieve recovery from chronic physical illnesses, and protection from psychological disorders and depression, and even to acquire influential psychological abilities enabling them to achieve success, change people, and treat their bodies and psyches significantly..." It is a treatment in which some exercises are mixed with charlatanism and superstition...
There is no doubt that such treatment is prohibited (Haram) because it is based on Buddhist philosophical foundations that contradict Islam, and because it is a form of superstition and charlatanism...
It is not necessary for a ruling of prohibition that there be a text from the Book or the Sunnah specifically mentioning "bio-energy healing" by name. Rather, it is sufficient to establish that this treatment refers back to pagan Buddhist philosophical foundations and that some of its exercises are mixed with charlatanism and superstition.
If this is the subject of the question, then its answer is as mentioned above. However, if it is another type, then it should be stated clearly so that we may answer it, if Allah wills.
