Question from Jihad Jihad:

Assalamu Alaikum,

Excuse me, what is the evidence that Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr sought Nusrah, even though he was in Madinah only as a carrier of the Da’wah? I hope for a clear explanation.

Question from Atiyeh Jabraeen:

Our Ameer and Sheikh Abu Yasin... Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu...

In the answer to the question "Those who abandon [the work] and the delay of victory" regarding the subject of seeking Nusrah, it was mentioned: "...or did Mus'ab perform the seeking of Nusrah better than the Messenger of Allah (saw)?" and it stated: "...the Messenger (saw) sought Nusrah over a dozen times and was not responded to, while he performed the work with the utmost excellence... yet Mus'ab (ra) was responded to...".

We would appreciate it, our noble Sheikh, if you could mention the evidence that Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr (ra) sought Nusrah from the people of Madinah... because what we know according to the books of Seerah, as well as the book The Islamic State by Sheikh Taqiuddin al-Nabhani (may Allah have mercy on him), is that Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr was in Madinah calling the people to Islam, and it has not come across us that he sought Nusrah from them for the Deen. May Allah bless you and unite us with you in the Islamic State soon.

Answer:

Walaikum Assalam Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu,

Your questions are similar, and here is the answer:

  1. I was surprised by this question, as you both are asking for evidence that Mus'ab (ra) sought Nusrah in Madinah while he was in Madinah as a Da’wah carrier—as Jihad says—or calling people to Islam—as Atiyeh says! Is it so?! Is seeking Nusrah not part of carrying the Da’wah? And is seeking Nusrah not part of the Da’wah to Islam?

The Da’wah carrier calls the people to Islam: the general public and the Ahl al-Quwwah wal-Man’ah (people of power and protection) among them. His work with the general public is solely carrying the Da’wah, whereas his work with the Ahl al-Quwwah wal-Man’ah is both carrying the Da’wah and seeking Nusrah... After the Almighty and All-Powerful Allah commanded the Messenger (saw) to seek Nusrah, he used to go to the tribal chiefs who possessed power and protection. He would call the tribal chief to Islam, and if he embraced Islam... etc., he would call him to provide Nusrah. However, if the tribal chief was not a person of power but from the general public, or if his tribe was small and lacked protection and power, the Messenger (saw) would call him to Islam but would not seek Nusrah from him.

  1. This is how Mus'ab (ra) worked; he called the people of Madinah to Islam and recited the Quran to them until Islam spread. Mus'ab said to the Messenger of Allah (saw) that no house remained except that Islam had entered it and a group of its people had embraced Islam. This means the Muslims were many, but the Ahl al-Quwwah wal-Man’ah among them were a limited number: 73 men and two women... When this power became available to Mus'ab, he returned in the 11th season [of the Prophetic mission] to the Messenger of Allah (saw) and presented the matter to him (saw)—that these people of power would come in the next season, i.e., the 12th season, so the Messenger (saw) could set whatever conditions he wished upon them, as they were ready, by the permission of Allah...

  2. I quote for you from what was mentioned in the book The Islamic State regarding this subject:

"...until the Hajj season of the 11th year arrived, he returned to Makkah and narrated to the Messenger of Allah (saw) the news of the Muslims and their strength, the news of Islam and its increasing spread. He depicted the society in Madinah as one that talked of nothing but the Messenger of Allah (saw), and there was nothing in its atmosphere except Islam, and that the strength of the Muslims and their protection there had such influence that Islam became dominant over everything. He mentioned that some Muslims would come this year who were greater in their belief in Allah and more ready to carry the Message of Allah and defend the Deen of Allah. The Prophet (saw) was very pleased with Mus'ab’s news and thought about the matter for a long time, comparing the society of Makkah and the society of Madinah. For he had spent twelve consecutive years calling to Allah in Makkah, spared no effort in the Da’wah, and left no opportunity without exerting all possible effort and enduring all kinds of harm; yet, the society remained rigid, and the Da’wah found no way into it... As for the society of Madinah, one year since the Islam of a group from the Khazraj, then the pledge of twelve men, and the efforts of Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr for another year, were sufficient to create an Islamic atmosphere in Madinah and for people to enter the Deen of Allah with this astonishing speed..."

  1. As you can see, before Mus'ab (ra) sent the Ahl al-Quwwah wal-Man’ah to the Messenger of Allah (saw), he came to the Messenger of Allah (saw) and informed him about the spread of Islam in Madinah and that among them were people of power and protection who were ready to come in the next season so the Messenger (saw) could take from them whatever covenant he wished... The Messenger (saw) was pleased with what Mus'ab said, and he endorsed and agreed for them to come in the next season. Thus it happened; they came in the next season, the 12th year of the Prophetic Mission, and that was the Second Pledge of al-Aqabah...

  2. Now we continue from the book The Islamic State:

"...He awaited the arrival of the pilgrims, and that was in the twelfth year of the Prophetic Mission, corresponding to 622 CE. There were indeed many pilgrims, and among them were seventy-five Muslims: seventy-three men and two women, who were Nusaybah bint Ka'b Umm 'Umara from the women of Banu Mazin ibn al-Najjar, and Asma bint 'Amr ibn 'Adi from the women of Banu Salama, who was Umm Mani'. The Messenger (saw) contacted them secretly... and he made an appointment for them to meet him at al-Aqabah in the middle of the night, during the middle of the days of Tashreeq. He said to them: 'Do not wake the sleeper, and do not wait for the absent.' On the day of their appointed meeting, after the first third of the night had passed, they crept out from their camps in secret, fearing their matter would be discovered. They went to al-Aqabah and all climbed the mountain, and the two women climbed with them, and they stayed waiting for the Messenger (saw)... then they said: 'Speak, O Messenger of Allah, and take for yourself and for your Lord what you like.' The Messenger (saw) replied, after reciting the Quran and encouraging them towards Islam:

أبايعكم على أن تمنعوني مما تمنعون منه نساءكم وأبناءكم

"I take your pledge that you will protect me as you protect your women and your children."

Al-Bara’ extended his hand to pledge to that and said: 'Give us your hand to pledge, O Messenger of Allah, for by Allah, we are the children of wars and people of armor (Ahl al-Halqah), we inherited it from forefather to forefather...' Then they said: 'What is for us, O Messenger of Allah, if we fulfill that?' The Messenger (saw) replied with a tranquil soul, saying:

الجنة

"Paradise."

..." End quote.

From all this, it becomes clear:

That the Messenger (saw) sent Mus'ab (ra) with the twelve men after the First Pledge of al-Aqabah in the 10th year of the Prophetic Mission... He (ra) used to call the people to Islam in Madinah, and among them were people of power whom he called to support (Nusrah) the Deen of Allah... And Mus'ab returned to the Messenger of Allah (saw) in the 11th year and presented the reality of the situation in Madinah to the Messenger (saw) in terms of the spread of Islam and the people of power among them, and that they were ready to come in the next season (the 12th year) so the Messenger (saw) could set whatever conditions he wished for the support (Nusrah) of His Deen... So the Messenger (saw) agreed and endorsed Mus'ab’s work which he performed in Madinah and was pleased with the good results achieved there by the permission of Allah. Thus, in the season of the 12th year, seventy-three men and two women arrived, and the Second Pledge of al-Aqabah took place, followed by the Hijrah and the establishment of the State...

Accordingly, Mus'ab’s work in Madinah is a fundamental pillar in the actions of Nusrah, for Allah granted victory through him at the hands of people of power and protection who prepared to support the Deen of Allah. I repeat to you what Mus'ab said to the Messenger of Allah (saw): ("...and that the strength of the Muslims and their protection there had such influence that Islam became dominant over everything. He mentioned that some Muslims would come this year who were greater in their belief in Allah and more ready to carry the Message of Allah and defend the Deen of Allah.")

So, may Allah have mercy on Mus'ab and be pleased with him, for Allah granted him a great victory that bore the fruit of the Second Pledge of al-Aqabah to the Messenger of Allah (saw), then came the Hijrah and the establishment of the State. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds.

I hope this is sufficient, if Allah wills.
